In the midst of making decisions about on how to approach a new iteration, one free of monetary exchange, the idea of using a theme related to broken nations arose. Fall was already over and despite having initially invited many researchers, only a few women accepted and soon after other followed, understanding that a project as such can only work based on shared solidarity. Without a preliminary clarification, this effort could be interpreted as a feminist initiative to show common interests on the land we call our country, but it is rather the irreducible consequence of the acceptance to a contribution for the sake of sharing a common platform for current work. Women, you who agreed to participate ... Thank you!

En medio de la toma de decisión sobre cómo enfocar una nueva iteración, una libre de intercambio monetario, surgió la idea de usar un tema relacionado con naciones abatidas. El otoño ya había terminado y a pesar de haber invitado inicialmente a muchos investigadores, sólo unas pocas mujeres aceptaron y otras se unieron posteriormente, entendiendo que un proyecto como éste sólo puede funcionar basándose en la solidaridad compartida. Sin una aclaración preliminar, este esfuerzo podría interpretarse como una iniciativa feminista para mostrar intereses comunes sobre la tierra que llamamos nuestro país, pero es más bien la consecuencia irreductible de la aceptación a contribuir con trabajo reciente dentro de la misma plataforma. Mujeres, a ustedes quienes han aceptado participar… ¡Gracias!

Fall Semester presents WINTER BREAK, its third iteration of online publications and visual contributions.

WINTER BREAK talks about the broken nation using Venezuela as example, the territory, the idea, and what seems to come with it. What is Venezuela today apart from a contradiction between its gross political reality and an enlarged fictitious self-image?

Within this contradiction, WINTER BREAK imagines ways of relating to the current socio-political machinery without just opting for the one-dimensional immersion in the politics that has plagued its recent times. The regime in power has introduced a new form whose tactics are close to artistic practice, inventing parallel truths, and questioning facts, which differs but does not exclude previous governments. 

Hence, those familiar to art and culture are in a unique position to offer an analysis of the specific forms that define the contemporary psycho-socio-political terrain in Venezuela. The composition of the veil of reality and fiction seems to have change over time. How is this veil folded and woven? What is its texture? How is it felt nowadays? And how does it affect the aesthetics of the image? 

THE BROKEN TERRITORY

WINTER BREAK has structured this edition within four thematic axes:

The power of the false: The virtual/real image as a model of either invisibility or overexposure of the national identity. The visual spectacle and what the images circulating the physical and the virtual tell us about facts. 

The rise of the abstract over the concrete: The modernist ideal and the neglected country. Infrastructure of the post-revolutionary Venezuela. The left as a model of destruction. 

The immaterial and the corporeal: The bodily link with others as the fundamental dimension that sustains the production of the world. Immaterial relations and desensitization that separates minds from bodies. Inmaterial disseminators of violent bodies. Massive exodus to new lands.

Futurology as an exercise of image visualization: Testing grounds for possible exits. Aesthetics of the potential, the corporeal, and the rhizome. The future of Venezuelan civil society, systemic activism, scenarios for unification, and tentative changes of power.

Fall Semester brings together a diverse group of artists, theorists, critics, researchers, and interested individuals to engage in multifaceted discourse on contemporary society and culture. Through a digital platform, the third iteration of Fall Semester, WINTER BREAK, addresses current intersections of what constitutes the real. After discussing the globalized city in its inaugural session in 2014, and the self in 2016, Fall Semester now turns its focus to the broken nation and those directly affected by its current social and economic turmoil.

WINTER BREAK habla sobre la nación abatida, usando a Venezuela como ejemplo, el territorio, la idea y lo que parece venir con eso. ¿Qué es Venezuela hoy, aparte de una contradicción entre su realidad política bruta y una auto-imagen ficticia engrandecida?

Dentro de esta contradicción, WINTER BREAK imagina formas de relacionarse con la actual maquinaria socio-política sin optar exclusivamente por la inmersión unidimensional en la política que ha plagado en los últimos tiempos. El régimen en el poder ha introducido una nueva forma cuyas tácticas son cercanas a la práctica artística, inventando verdades paralelas y cuestionando hechos, que difieren pero no excluyen a los gobiernos anteriores.

Por lo tanto, aquellos que están familiarizados con el arte y la cultura están en una posición única para ofrecer un análisis de las formas específicas que definen el terreno psico-sociopolítico contemporáneo en Venezuela. La composición del velo de la realidad y la ficción parece haber cambiado con el tiempo. ¿Cómo se dobla y teje este velo? ¿Cuál es su textura? ¿Cómo se siente hoy en día? ¿Y cómo afecta a la estética de la imagen?

EL TERRITORIO ABATIDO

WINTER BREAK ha estructurado esta edición dentro de cuatro ejes temáticos:

El poder de lo falso: La imagen virtual/real como modelo de invisibilidad o sobreexposición de la identidad nacional. El espectáculo visual y lo que las imágenes que circulan lo físico y lo virtual nos hablan de lo hechos.

El surgimiento de lo abstracto sobre lo concreto: el ideal modernista y el país abandonado. Infraestructura de la Venezuela post-revolucionaria. La izquierda como modelo de destrucción.

Lo inmaterial y lo corpóreo: el vínculo corporal con otros como la dimensión fundamental que sustenta la producción del mundo. Relaciones inmateriales y desensibilización que separa las mentes de los cuerpos. Difusores Inmateriales de cuerpos violentos. El éxodo masivo a nuevas tierras.

La futurología como ejercicio de visualización de imágenes: pruebas de posibles salidas. Estética del potencial, lo corpóreo y el rizoma. El futuro de la sociedad civil venezolana, el activismo sistémico, los escenarios de unificación y los cambios tentativos de poder.

Fall Semester reúne a un grupo diverso de artistas, teóricos, críticos, investigadores e individuos interesados ​​en participar en un discurso multifacético sobre sociedad y cultura contemporánea. A través de una plataforma digital, la tercera iteración del Fall Semester, WINTER BREAK, aborda las intersecciones actuales de lo que constituye lo real. Después de hablar de la ciudad globalizada en su sesión inaugural en el 2014, y del ser en el 2016, esta edición se centra en la nación abatida y en aquellos directamente afectados por su agitación social y económica actual.
